During the “classic” Doctor Who years, there were eight “regenerations” or new Doctor Who characters. These included:

Doctor #1 ~ William Hartnell ~ who lasted 4 ½ seasons from November 23, 1963 to October 29, 1966 with 134 episodes.

Doctor #2 ~ Patrick Troughton ~ who lasted 2 ½ from November 5, 1966 to June 21, 1969 with 119 episodes.

Doctor #3 ~ Jon Pertwee ~ who lasted 5 seasons from January 3, 1970 to June 8, 1974 with 128 episodes.

Doctor #4 ~ Tom Baker ~ who lasted the longest with 7 seasons from December 28, 1974 to March 21, 1981 with 198 episodes.

Doctor #5 ~ Peter Davison ~ who lasted 3 seasons from January 4, 1982 to March 16, 1984 with 68 episodes.

Doctor #6 ~ Colin Baker ~ who lasted 3 seasons from March 22, 1984 to December 6, 1986 with 31 episodes.

Doctor #7 ~ Sylvester McCoy ~ who lasted 3 seasons from September 7, 1987 to December 6, 1989 with 42 episodes.

Doctor #8 ~ Paul McGann ~ who filmed only one movie, released on May 27, 1996.

During the
Doctor Who's NU-WHO years, there have been four regenerations. These include:

Doctor #9 ~ Christopher Eccleston ~ who filmed 1 season from March 26, 2005 to June 18, 2005 with 13 episodes.

Doctor #10 ~ David Tennant ~ who lasted 3 seasons and 6 specials from April 15, 2006 to January 1, 2010 with 45 episodes.

Doctor # 11 ~ Matt Smith ~ who lasted 4 seasons and 2 specials from April 3, 2010 to December 25, 2013 with 41 episodes.

Doctor # 12 ~Peter Capaldi ~ who is currently in his 2nd season from August 23, 2014 to the present with 21 episodes so far.

Note* ~ There is a
13th Doctor called the War Doctor played by John Hurt, who was featured in the “Day of the Doctor” movie on December 25, 2013. He was supposedly a regeneration of the 8th Doctor.

Note** ~ Sadly because of the BBC practice of junking old film, many of the early episodes from the 1960’s no longer exist in film, but do exist as audio recordings.

Basically, Doctor Who is a renegade TIME LORD from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation Kasterborous. He travels through time and space in a TARDIS (or Time and Relative Dimensions in Space) which is disguised as a blue Police Box.

He is one of the last of the Time Lords and tries hard to save other species and planets from destruction. He is especially fond of the planet, Earth and enjoys traveling with s series of companions; some human, some not and many are female. The Doctor has the ability to “regenerate” into a new body while retaining all the memories of the previous regenerations. (This comes in handy every time a new actor is required for the part.)

The advice I give ALL friends who are new to Doctor Who is to start by watching the NU-WHO episodes first, starting with Christopher Eccelston into David Tennant, then Matt Smith and finally Peter Capaldi. After that, you can go back to the "CLASSIC" episodes which I feel are fascinating but dated.

For all my non-Whovians friends, let’s start with the obvious... People who love and follow Doctor Who are called Whovians.

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television show that is produced by the BBC (or British Broadcasting Company). It premiered on November 23, 1963. Not a good day to start, as that was the day that the United States President, John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Rating suffered. but with each episode the audience grew.

Doctor Who is divided into three groups:

  •                The 26 seasons of “CLASSIC” DOCTOR WHO episodes from 1963 until 1989.
  •             The “DARK PERIOD” from 1989 to 2005 when only one Doctor Who movie was made.
  •             The nine seasons of “NU-WHO” or current Doctor Who episodes from 2005 to the present.

The Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston

In 2005, the BBC relaunched Doctor Who after a 16-year absence from episodic television. Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and Mal Young served as executive producers, Phil Collinson as producer, and Christopher Eccleston took the lead role of the Ninth Doctor. Christopher was born on February 16, 1964 in Langworthy, Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire, England. He starred for one season and 13 episodes. Before his episodes even aired, he had already decided not to continue with a second season and David Tennant was hired before the producers were sure the series would be a success.
