Hoyt Wayne Axton,
son of Mae Axton who wrote "Heartbreak Hotel", was born on March 25, 1938,
in Duncan, Oklahoma. He worked as a folksinger in the early 50's, went on to
write songs, perform, act in both movies and television. He formed his own
record label, Jeremiah Records, in 1978. He wrote "Joy To The World" and
"Never Been To Spain" for Three Dog Night. His best known country hits
included "When the Morning Comes" and "Boney Fingers" (1974) and "Della and
the Dealer" (1979). He married Kathryn Roberts and they had 3 children,
April, Michael and Mark. He was married to Donna 'Bambi' Roberts from 1980 -
1990, and they had one son, Matthew. He finally married Deborah Hawkins on
August 28, 1997 and they remained married until his death. He also has
another son named Mark, who is also a country singer. Hoyt passed away
on October 26, 1999 at his ranch in Helena, Montana of a massive heart attack.
Dennis traveled as Hoyt's fiddle
player from 1978 until 1994 when Hoyt suffered a stroke. During those years
Hoyt's band included: Donna Roberts Axton [piano], Bruce "Buffalo" Barlow
[bass], Hank Barrio [electric guitar], Rhys Clark [drums], Mark Dawson
[guitar, harmonica, back-up locals], Jana Lee Dare, Carol Hunt, Mary
Lynn-Dias [back-up singers] and, of course, Dennis Fetchet [fiddle, guitar
and harmonica]. Dennis' show stopping specialty was to play the "Orange
Blossom Special" with the fiddle behind his head. It was this skill that
originally helped land him his job with Hoyt. Dennis has described Hoyt as
"a really fun guy" and "a kind and generous friend." Below are some of
Dennis' personal photos of those years.
