Obituary for David Vincent that appeared in the Orange County Register

in Huntington Beach, California on Thursday, March 31, 2005.

David Lloyd Vincent  [my beloved husband]

David Lloyd Vincent died Monday, March 21, 2005 in Huntington Beach, California of natural causes. He was 48.

David was born on March 29, 1956, in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of Harry L. and Patricia [Laymon] Vincent. He resided in Portage, Michigan and graduated from Portage Northern High School and Michigan State University with a Batchelor of Science degree in Mathematics. David worked in the Aerospace industry and was a Senior Scientist-Engineer at Raytheon Co.

David was a part time musician and a member of the International Bluegrass Association. He was a deacon and an audio-visual technician at his church, The Sanctuary of Huntington Beach, California.

He enjoyed computers, playing jazz and bluegrass on his bass, and reading science fiction books. He was greatly admired and esteemed in the aerospace community. He was a kind and loving family man and a devoted Christian.

He is survived by his wife, Jan and his daughter, Sarah, both of Huntington Beach, California; his son, Chris Copeland, daughter-in-law, Joi and three grandsons, Garrison, Gage and Gavin of Rancho Cucamonga, California: his mother, Patricia Vincent of Austin, Texas; his brother, Mark Vincent of St. Clair, Michigan; his brother, Jeff Vincent of  McFarland, Wisconsin; his sister, Susan Vincent of Austin, Texas; his sister, Barbara Friend of Raleigh, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. His father, Harry and Brother James are deceased.

A memorial service will be held at Dilday Brothers Mortuary in Huntington Beach, California on Saturday, April 2, at 1 pm with a reception to follow.

Editors Note: David's ashes were released to the sea in a private service on board the yacht, White Light on Friday, May 27, 2005 in the Pacific Ocean near Huntington Beach, California. Those attending the service included his wife, Jan, daughter, Sarah, son, Christopher and daughter-in-law, Joi Copeland and eldest grandson, Garrison.

 

Obituary for Henrietta Raiche that appeared in the Kankakee Journal

in Kankakee, Illinois during August of 2005.

Henrietta Raiche [my maternal great-aunt]

Visitation for Henrietta M. Raiche, 86, of Kankakee, will be from 4 - 9 pm Friday at the Clancy - Gernon - Hertz Funeral Home, West Kankakee. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where she was a member.

Cremation rites will be accorded. Inurnment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley. She died Saturday (August 27, 2005) at Provena Heritage Village.

Mrs. Raiche retired from Sun Chemical. She had been a secretary at St. Rose School, employed by the Plumbers/Pipefitters Local 383 was was also a clerk for Judge Henry.

She was born February 4, 1919 in Kankakee, the daughter of Eugene Caron and Rose Brouillette Caron. Her husband, Francis E. Raiche, whom she married on May 23, 1953 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church died February 1, 1983. She did volunteer work at St. Rose Church.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John and Kim Raiche of Orland Park and one daughter and son-in-law, Caron and Steve Wenzel of Woodstock, and four grandchildren.

Deceased are one brother, Edward Caron and one sister, Wilhelmine Tinney.

Obituary for Phyllis Longtin [nee Raiche] that appeared in the Daily Journal

Phyllis J. Longtin died April 13,2002 at home in Montclair, Calif.

The former Phyllis Raiche, she was born April 11, 1930 to Clement Raiche and Macel Caillouette. She married Eugene Longtin on June 21, 1952 at St. Patrick Church in Kankakee, Il.

Surviving are her husband, Gene, one son, Dale Longtin of Fontana, Ca., four daughters and two sons-in-law. Janet and David Vincent of Huntington Beach, Ca., Cindy Longtin of Upland, Ca., Theresa and Pat Alsup of Torrance, Ca., and Diane Longtin of Ontario, Ca. three grandsons, Christopher, Philip, and Ted, four granddaughters, Madelaine, Carolyn, Erica and Sarah and one great grandson, Garrison.

She is also survived by four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Rita Lagacy of Clifton, Il., Mary Ellen and Gordon Burton of Bourbonnais, Il., Carol Riley of Fresno, Ca., Nancy and James Reising of Northbrook, Il., one brother and sister-in-law, David and Madonna Raiche of Bourbonnais, Il. and many nieces and nephews.

One brother, Robert and one sister, Doris Ann are deceased.

Mrs. Longtin was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She had served on the Parish Board for three years, was a Choir member for over 25 years and taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes at the parish school for over 30 years.

She enjoyed reading and was an avid L.A. Dodger baseball fan.

Burial will be in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Ca.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Visiting Nurses Hospice Program or Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

 

Obituary for Albert Surprenant that appeared in the Kankakee Journal

Albert Surprenant, 82, Dies: Funeral Services Thursday [my paternal great-grandfather]

Albert Surprenant, 82, retired farmer who lived in this community all his life, died Monday at a Kankakee nursing home after a lingering illness. He resided at 223 S. Fifth Ave.

Funeral services will be at 10 am Thursday in St. Rose Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Manteno. Friends may call at the Clancy Funeral Home after 7 pm today. Rosary will be at 8 pm Wednesday.

Mr. Surprenant was born January 8, 1876 in Manteno Township.

Surviving are the wife, Mary, to whom he was married in St. George in 1897, daughters, Mrs. Alfred Longtin of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Roland Caron of Kankakee, and Mrs. Art Sieloff of Chicago, a son, Freddie Surprenant of Los Angeles, California, a bother, Alexis of Mt. Clemons, Michigan, a sister, Mrs. Eva Lambert of Marshall, Minnesota, 14 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters and a son. Mr. Surprenant was a member of St. Rose Church.

Surprenant Rites Held

Rites were held at 10 am Thursday in St. Rose Church for Albert Surprenant, 82, who died Monday. The Rev. Donald E. Benzing was celebrant of the requiem high Mass, assisted by Rev. John L. Lyons as deacon and Rev. Ives Delapierre as sub deacon. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Manteno. Pallbearers were Phillip and Hector Surprenant, Zephier Regnier, Lionel and Harvey Guimond, and Lester Barrie.

Obituary for Mose Caillouette

That appeared in the Kankakee Journal in Kankakee, Illinois on June 14, 1955

Mose G. Caillouette, 76, of 160 N. Blaine Ave., Bradley, died at 7:10 p.m. Monday in St. Mary's Hospital following a three week illness.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bradley, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at Clancy Funeral Homes tonight and until the time of services. Recitation of the rosary will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Caillouette, a resident of Kankakee for 45 years, was a welder at Florence Stove Co. before his retirement. His wife, Luminia, died in 1944.

Surviving is a son, Lester of Bradley; daughter, Mrs. Clement Raiche of Kankakee; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 

Obituary for Alma  McMillan [nee Surprenant] that appeared in the Kankakee Journal Newspaper

A funeral Mass for Alma McMillan, 70, the sister of a Kankakee resident, was celebrated January 8, 1982 at Our lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Hemet, California.

Mrs. McMillan died January 6, 1982 at City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, California.

She was born December 11, 1911 in Illinois. She had lived in California for 10 years.

Before her retirement, she had been employed for 35 years as a bookbinder by the Spinner Brothers Bookbindery.

Mrs. McMillan was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Church, active in the City of Hope organizations and Eden Roc Villa activities.

Survivors include her husband, Ted McMillan, a son, Frank Blake of San Fernando, California, two daughters, Bonnie Reitz of Chicago and Yvonne Semono of Crown Point, Indiana, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, two sisters, Cecile Caron of Kankakee and Leah Longtin of Hemet, California and one brother, Fred Prenant of Hemet, California.

Burial was in the San Jacinto Valley Cemetery.

A memorial in Mrs. McMilan’s name has been established for the City of Hope, 208 West Eighth Street, Duarte, California 90014.

 

Obituary for Alexis Surprenant that appeared in a Mount Clemons, Michigan newspaper

during December of 1960.

Mr. Alexis O. Surprenant, December 26, 1960 [my paternal great grand-uncle]

Mr. Alexis O. Surprenant of 225 Euclid Avenue, Mount Clemons, passed away at the Paradise Nursing Home early Monday morning at the age of 81 years. Mr. Surprenant had been there for the past eight months.

Mr. Surprenant was born on September 20, 1879 in Manteno, Illinois, a son of the late Lawrence O. and Malina Surprenant. He was united in marriage with Lucy J. Giroux in April of 1900. The couple came to Macomb County in 1921 and in 1954 moved to 341 Harrington, Mt. Clemons. Mrs. Surprenant expired on February 14, 1959.

Surviving are five children, Mrs. Viola Sheppard of Fraser, Hilaire of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Lorraine Voolmert of East Detroit, Theodore of Mt. Clemons and Mrs. Madeleine Van Zant of Mishawaka, Indiana. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren one sister, Mrs. Eva Lambert of Minnesota. One daughter, Jeannette predeceased her father.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 9:00 am at the Will and Schwarzhoff Funeral Home, 233 North Gratiot Avenue, Mt. Clemons and 10:00 o’clock at St. Peter Catholic Church with Reverend Father Paul C. Heenan officiating. Entombment will be in the Holy Sepulchre Mausoleum.

The rosary will be recited at the funeral home Wednesday evening at 8:00 o’clock.

 

Obituary for Clement Raiche from the Kankakee Journal Newspaper

in Kankakee, Illinois on February 9, 1970.

Clement Raiche, Kankakee, Dies [my maternal grandfather]

Funeral services will be at 11 am Wednesday for Clement Raiche, 65, 646 South Greenwood Avenue. Mr. Raiche died at 4:30 pm Sunday at St. Mary’s Hospital after a three month’s illness.

A former district deputy of the Knights of Columbus, he was a retired postal clerk, and had lived in Kankakee since he was 4 years old. He had served at the Kankakee Post Office for 31 years.

The funeral will be at St. Patrick’s Church, and visitation will be at the Clancy Funeral Home after 2 pm Tuesday and until the service.

The rosary will be recited at 8 pm Tuesday.

Mr. Raiche was born October 25, 1904 in Menominee, Michigan, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Denis Raiche. He was married October 12, 1926 to the former Macel Caillouette.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, Mrs. Rita Lagacy of Momence, Mrs. Phyllis Longtin of Montclair, California, Mrs. Mary Ellen Burton of Bourbonnais, Mrs. Carol Riley of St. Anne, Mrs. Nancy Reising of Kankakee, son, David of Kankakee, 21 grandchildren and a brother, Francis of Kankakee.

Mr. Raiche had entered the plumbing business with his father after graduation from St. Viator’s Academy, and after 13 years, he entered the postal service. He served as distribution clerk, window clerk, and assistant superintendent of mails, later becoming accountable paper custodian in charge of payroll, the entire stamp stock and cost accounting procedures.

During his years in the plumbing business, he was a member of Local 383 International Pipefitters Union, A. F. of L. He was later a member of Local 5007, United Federation of Postal Clerks.

He was a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and in 1947, he was elected warden of the Illinois State Counsel.

He was a faithful navigator of the Bishop McNamara General Assembly. Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus and was faithful admiral in the assembly.

In 1959, he was appointed deputy of District 30, Knights of Columbus

He was a member of the board of directors of St. Mary’s Retreat House in Lemont and a member of St. Francis Layman’s Retreat League.

He was active in Te Deum International, a Kankakee Catholic forum in the community for many years, and was it’s first president.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s parish since 1928 and a member of the Holy Name Society.

From 1915-1927, he was active in scouting and served as scoutmaster of St. Rose Troop for two years.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

 

Obituary for Armand Harpin that appeared in the Kankakee Journal in Kankakee, Illinois on July, 1999.

Visitation for Armand J. Harpin, 84, of Kankakee, will be from 4-8 pm Wednesday, with a wake service at 4 pm at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Thursday at St. Patrick’s Church, Kankakee.

Burial, with military rites, will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, where he was a member and belonged to the Ministry of Praise or to the donor’s choice.

Mr. Harpin died Monday [July 12, 1999] at Riverside Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 14, 1914 in Kankakee, the son of Louis and Nelda Boudreau Harpin, who are deceased.

His wife, the former Esther T. Longtin, whom he married September 29, 1933, died January 4, 1989.

Mr. Harpin was employed from the age of 14 by the same company with various owners known as Bear Brand Hosiery, paramount Textiles, Pope Brace, Parke Davis and finally Ralph Storrs Inc. at the time of his retirement in 1988.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Charles J. and Lynn Harpin of St. Anne, one daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Rodney Van Der Karr of Mokena, three grandsons, Brenton Harpin of St. Anne, Ryan and Jennifer Van Der Karr of Joliet, and Kyle Van Der Karr of Crest Hill, one granddaughter, Kimberlee Harpin of Aroma Park, great grandson, Riley Van Der Karr of Joliet, great granddaughter, Brianna Carter of Aroma Park, four sisters and one brother-in-law, Alma White of Brea, California,  Edna and Lester Souligne of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Laura DeLorenzo of Sun City West, Arizona, Loretta Lauriz of Bourbonnais, Vera Harpin of Kankakee, Shirley Longtin of Grant Park, a very special friend, Margaret Dumas of Kankakee and several nieces and nephews.

Five brothers, Albert, Robert, Eugene, Edwin ‘Bill” and Raymond, and four sisters, Eva and Rita Harpin, Mary Gravelle, and Blanche Trunk, and one grandson, Charles J. Harpin, Jr. are deceased.

He was a veteran of World War II. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

Visitation will be at the funeral home until 8 pm tonight.

Born March 18, 1898, in St. George, Illinois, Mrs. Longtin lived in the community for 20 years before moving to Ontario 71/2 years ago. She lived in the state for 33 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

Survivors include sons, Larry of Homeland, Tom of Hemet, Gene of Montclair, Margaret Henry of Ontario, and Eleanor Welch of Hemet; a sister, Cecile Caron of Illinois: a brother, Fred Prenant of Yucca Valley; 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Ontario, California- Leah Longtin, 89, of Ontario, Calif., a former resident of Bradley, died Monday [Feb. 1, 1988] at San Antonio Hospital, Upland, California.

Mrs. Longtin was born March 18, 1898 in Manteno Township to Albert and Mary Surprenant.

She and her husband, Alfred had lived in Bradley for a number of years before moving to California in 1955. Her husband proceeded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Larry of Homeland, Calif., Tom of Hemet, Calif., and Gene of Montclair, Calif.; two daughters, Margaret Henry of Ontario, Calif., and Eleanor Welsh of Hemet, Calif.; 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson; and a brother and sister in law, Fred and Phyllis Prenant of Yucca Valley, Calif.

A homemaker, she was a native of St. George, Illinois. And an Ontario resident four years. She was a member of the Catholic faith..

She is survived by three sons, Larry of Homeland, Calif., Tom of Hemet, Calif., and Gene of Montclair, Calif.; two daughters, Margaret Henry of Ontario, Calif., and Eleanor Welsh of Hemet, Calif.; 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Services are pending at McWane Funeral Home, Hemet. Interment will be in San Jacinto.

Edmond H. Longtin, 63, RR2, died Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness.

Born March 13, 1913 near St. George, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julien Longtin. Mr. Longtin was a farmer in the St. George area all his life.

Visitation will be after 7 pm Monday at the Gordon and Sexton Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 8 pm. Visitation will also be after 2 pm on Tuesday.

The very Reverend Edmund Gregory will say the funeral Mass at 10 am Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Church. Burial will be at St. George Cemetery.

Survivors include five brothers, Edward, Manteno, Leo and Paul, Bourbonnais, Armand, Kankakee, and Alfred, Hemet, California, three sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Dorsey and Esther Harpin, both of Kankakee and Mrs. Mathilda Burton of Bradley.

Edmond H. Longtin, 63, Manteno, died Saturday, March 13 at St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness.

Born March 13, 1913, near St. George, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian Longtin. Mr. Longtin was a farmer in the St. George area all his life.

Visitation was Monday and Tuesday at the Gordon and Sexton Funeral Home, where the Rosary was recited at 8 pm Tuesday.

The very Rev. Edmund Gregory officiated at the 10 am funeral Mass, Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Church. Burial was in the St. George Cemetery.

Survivors include five brothers, Edward, Manteno, Leo and Paul, Bourbonnais, Armand, Kankakee, and Alfred, Hemet, California, three sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Dorsey and Esther Harpin, both of Kankakee and Mrs. Mathilda Burton of Bradley.

Mr. Longtin was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and the Holy Name Society.

Manteno – The funeral mass for Edmund H. Longtin, 63, RR2, who died Saturday was said today at St. Joseph’s Church. Burial was in St. George Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ralph Simeur, Isadore Ruder, Mike Joyce, Paul Lamore, Earl Senesac, and Bernard Lesage.

A funeral Mass for Fred Albert Prenant, 73, a former resident of the Kankakee area, was celebrated at 9:30 am February 14, 1991 at St. Mary of the Valley Catholic Church in Yucca Valley by Rev. Edward Hayes.

Burial was at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.

Mr. Prenant died February 8, 1991 at Loma Linda Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda, California.

A native of Manteno, he was born October 9, 1917 and lived in the Kankakee area from 1947 to 1957. The former Fred Albert Surprenant, he had legally changed his name.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis, a son, Vince Prenant of Banning, California, two daughters, Mary Cox of Yucca Valley, California and Christine Russell of Sepulveda, California, 8 grandchildren and a sister, Cecile Caron of Kankakee.

From 1945-1948, he served apprenticeship with Clancy Funeral Home in Kankakee. A California resident for 35 years, he had been an embalmer for 44 years and with the Prenant Mortuary Service for many years before his retirement.

Mr. Prenant was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hemet, California.

Momence – Visitation for Joseph Edmund Lagacy, Sr., 66 of Momence, will be from 3-5 and 6-9 pm. Tuesday at the Cotter Funeral Home in Momence. The rosary will be recited at 7 pm.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by Rev. Phillip Dedera.

Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Mr. Lagacy died Friday, September 15, 1989 at Gallup, New Mexico following a sudden illness.

A retired farmer, Mr. Lagacy was born January 1, 1923, Ganeer Township to the late Armand and Aurora [Dubois] Lagacy, Sr.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Raiche, whom he married January 19, 1949 in Kankakee; three sons and daughter-in-laws, Joe and Val Lagacy of Bourbonnais, Murrell and Cindy Lagacy, and Greg and Faith Lagacy of Grant Park and one daughter, Michelle Lagacy of Kankakee; seven grandchildren; one brother, Armand Lagacy Jr. of Bourbonnais and one sister, Florence Bruck of Momence.

Mr. Lagacy was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Momence and the Kankakee Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

Lester Caillouette, 86, of Bourbonnais, died Tuesday [June 17, 1997] at Miller Healthcare Center in Kankakee.

Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Friday with a wake service at 7 pm at Clancey-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church in Bradley, where he was a member. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kankakee. Memorials may be made to his church or the Salvation Army.

He was born October 19, 1910, the son of Mose and Minnie Pray Caillouette. His wife is the former Opal Arseneau, whom he married October 11, 1942 at St. Patrick’s, died January 24, 1996. Mr. Caillouette was a former distributor for Dr. Pepper Soft Drink Company and a retired employee of A. O. Smith Corp.

He was a former teamster and a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School.

Surviving are one daughter, and son-in-law, Barbara and Lance Murray of Bourbonnais, one sister, Macel Raiche of Kankakee, two grandchildren, Jessica and Joyce Murray.

Deceased are one brother and one sister.

Lester Caillouette [Funeral notice]

A funeral Mass for Lester Caillouette, 86, of Bourbonnais, was celebrated at 10 am Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Bradley, bu the Rev. Doug Hauber. Mr. Caillouette died June 17, 1997 at Miller Healthcare Center.

Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Raiche, Gordon Burton, Harvey Tuttle, Thomas LaFlamme, Robert Papineau and Robert Bloom.

Mrs. Lucy J. Surprenant, 341 Harrington Street, Mount Clemons, passed away at Wil-Mar Convalescent Home, Utica Saturday afternoon at the age of 79 years. She was born in Manteno, Illinois, a daughter of the late Hilaire and Louise Prairie Giroux. In April 1900, the deceased married Alexis Surprenant and the couple moved to Macomb County in 1921. The family lived at their present home for the past five years. Mrs. Surprenant was a member of St. Thecia Catholic Church, Mount Clemons.

Surviving are her husband, Alexis, five children, Mrs. Viola Sheppard of Fraser, Hilaire of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Lorraine Vollmert of East Detroit, Theodore of Mt. Clemons and Mrs. Madeline Van Zant of Mishawaka, Indiana. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, two brothers, Noel Giroux of Kankakee, Illinois and Joseph Giroux of Chicago, Illinois, two sisters, Mrs. Mary LaRogue of Manteno, Illinois and Mrs. Elizabeth Leriger of Windsor, Ontario.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 am at the Will and Schwarzhoff Funeral Home, 233 North Gratiot Avenue, Mt. Clemons, and 10:00 o’ clock at St. Thecia Roman Catholic Church, with Reverend Father T. J. Rzezuik officiating. Entombment will be in the Holy Sepulchre Mausoleum, Oakland County, Michigan. The Holy Rosary will be recited at the funeral home Monday evening at 8 o’ clock.

Funeral Monday for Mrs. Mary Surprenant, 86 [my paternal great grandmother]

Mrs. Mary Surprenant, 86 year old lifetime resident of Kankakee County, died at 11pm Thursday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roland Caron, 975 N. 5th Ave., after a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Monday in St. Rose Church with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Manteno. The body is at the Clancy Funeral Home where visiting hours will be from 7 pm Saturday until the hour of services. The rosary will be recited at 8 pm Sunday.

Mrs. Surprenant was born June 17, 1874 in Manteno, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cleophas Guimond. She was married to Albert Surprenant in St. George on January 12, 1897. He died in 1958.

Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Caron, Mrs. Alfred Longtin of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Art Sieloff of Chicago, Illinois, a son, Fred Surprenant of Gardena, California, Brothers, Henry Guimond of Fowler, Indiana, and Fred Guimond of Manteno, 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by  a son, six sisters and 5 brothers in addition to the parents. Mrs. Surprenant was a member of St. Anne’s Sodality of St. Rose Church.

 

Services Held

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Surprenant, 86, of 975 N. Fifth Ave. who died Thursday were held Monday at St. Rose Church. The Rev. Eugene Surprenant, a nephew, was celebrant assisted by the Rev. Donald Benzing, and Rev. Richard Ruffalo. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Manteno. Pallbearers were Leo Gallois, Zephire Regnier, Philip Surprenant, Isadore Guimond, Herman LeBeau and Edward Guimond.

Macel P. Raiche, 93, of Kankakee, died Sunday [December 21, 1997] at Riverside Medical Center, following a short illness.

She was born October 23, 1904 in Beaverville, the daughter of Mose and Luminia Pray Caillouette.

Her husband, Clement N. Raiche, whom she married October 12, 1926 in Kankakee, died February 8, 1970.

Surviving are five daughters and three son-in-laws, Rita Lagacy of Ashkum, Phyllis and Gene Longtin of Montclair, California, Mary Ellen and Gordie Burton of Bourbonnais, Carol Riley of Fresno, California, Nancy and Jim Reising of Northbrook, one son and daughter-in-law, David and Madonna Raiche of Kankakee, 26 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, two sister-in-laws, Victoria Raiche of Kankakee and Henrietta Raiche of Venice, Florida .

A brother, Lester Caillouette, is deceased.

She served as an auxiliary member of the former Lone Scouts and a member of the Iroquois County Historical and Genealogical Society and the first executive board of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine at St. Patrick’s Parish. She served as a Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America 1960-1970 and 1975-1977, president of the Council of Catholic Women, and Trustee of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary of Kankakee.

Robert "Bobby" Bowers, Ex-Bradleyan Dies In California [my paternal 1st cousin]

Funeral services for Robert Lowell Bowers, 21, formerly of Bradley, who was fatally injured Sunday near Torrance, California in a train-auto collision will be held Thursday in Torrance.

He was the son of William T. Bowers, formerly of Bradley, now of Miami, Florida and the former Margaret Longtin of Bradley, and now a resident of Ontario, California.

In addition to the parents survivors include his widow, Linda, an infant son, Robert of Torrance; two sisters, Mrs. Linda Marie Bohannan, Torrance and Judie Kay of Ontario.

The Halversen Funeral Home in Torrance is in charge of funeral arrangements.

 

Article about the death of Bobby Bowers

Torrance- Two youths, one from Ontario, were crushed to death Sunday when their compact car collided with a freight train at the Arlington Avenue crossing. Torrance police said the small car was carried 634 feet on the front of the engine.

The victims were Robert Bowers, 21, of 1030 East Holt Blvd. Ontario, and Timothy Wade, 19, of Torrance.

Bowers owned and was driving the automobile. Police said he was dead when they arrived shortly after the 5:16 pm collision. Wade, as he was being checked by officers, murmured, “Please help me.” And then he died.

Both men were crushed between the seat and the dashboard. Officers said. The car was southbound on Arlington Avenue and was struck from the left side by the westbound freight. Rescuers worked more than an hour to remove the bodies which were released to a Torrance mortuary.

The train engineer, William L. Stephens, was not held and the train was allowed to continue.

Mrs. Longtin died Saturday[ May 15, 1999] at her home.

She was born December 30, 1917 in Momence, the daughter of Louis and Lillie Marcotte Lagacy.

Her husband, Paul L. Longtin, whom she married on April 20, 1938 in Momence, died March 9, 1986.

A homemaker, Mrs. Longtin assisted with the operation of the family farm.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Laverne and Norene Longtin of Bourbonnais, one daughter, Linda Longtin of Bourbonnais, four sisters, Isola Boudreau and Marguerite Longtin both of Momence, Cecile Yost of Grant Park, and Josephine Dubois of Urbana, Three brothers, Henry Lagacy of Bourbonnais, George Lagacy of Momence, and Lawrence Lagacy of Glen Beaulah, Wisconsin, three grandchildren, Christopher Longtin and Jason Longtin, both of Bradley, and Jennifer and Louis Baron of Bourbonnais, and nieces and nephews.

Deceased are one sister, Rose and one brother, Philip.

Salton Sea, California – Memorial services for Thomas A. Longtin, 76, of Salton sea, California for the past 8 years and a native of St. George were held January 13, 1998 in Riverside, California.

Mr. Longtin died January 7th at Pettis Veterans Hospital, Loma Linda from complications of diabetes. Burial was January 16, 1998 at Riverside National Cemetery with military honors.

He was born in St. George, Illinois. Mr. Longtin served in the US Army Infantry from 1944-1946 with the rank of staff sergeant.

Thomas Longtin

Memorial services for Thomas A. Longtin, formally of Hemet, will be 3:00 pm today at Preston and Simons Mortuary in Riverside. Friends may call at the mortuary from 1 pm until service time. He died Wednesday of kidney failure due to diabetes at the Jerry L. Pettis Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda. He was 76. Interment will be in the columbarium at the Riverside National Cemetery.

Mr. Longtin, who was born in St. George, Illinois lived in Salton Sea for 8 years. He previously lived in Hemet for 20 years. He served in the US Army Infantry from 1944-1946 with the rank of staff sergeant. He was a business owner for 20 years including Longtin’s Gas Station in Pomona, Main Street Grill and J & S Ice House , both in San Jacinto and Calvary Thrift Store in Hemet. He was also a tool and die maker for 15 years.

He was a volunteer at the San Jacinto Center for the Blind. He received a 20 year Monarch Award from the Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha, two daughters, Joan Curry of Riverside, California, Beverly Parcel of Woodinville, Washington, a son, Jerome of Salton Sea, California, 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, two brothers, Lawrence of Lake Isabella, California and Eugene of Montclair, California and two sisters, Marge Henry of Lake Isabella, California and Eleanor Welch of Hemet, California.

The son of the late Phillip and Theolinda Olsen Burton, he was born September 17, 1909 in Manteno, Illinois.

Surviving are his wife, the former Rose Laney, whom he married June 30, 1984 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, three sons and daughters-in-law, William and Joan Burton of Bradley, Maynard and Florence Burton of Livermore, California, Gordon and Maryellen Burton of Bourbonnais, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and a sister, Florence Bissonnette of Detroit, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by two great grand children, five brothers and five sisters.

Mr. Burton was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

For 35 years Mr. Burton was employed at the Bear Brand Hosiery Co. and he retired from Mobil Chemical Co.

Mr. Burton died Wednesday [August 7, 1991] at St, Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee.

Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery in Beaverville. Pallbearers were Steve, Mike and Scott Burton, Alex Sandra, Francis O’ Connor and Harold Tobenski.

William Henry passed away in Arizona on March 2, 1998 at the age of 69. William was born in Hominy, Oklahoma on September 2, 1928. William was employed as a teamster for 35 years. He worked for Ameron Steel in Etiwanda, California.

William moved to Lake Isabella in 1988, where he belonged to the Moose Lodge and camping club.

William is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marge Henry, his daughters, Sharon Styrk of Fontana, California, Nancy Hossler of Tucson, Arizona, Janet Henry and Linda Frizzell of Etiwanda, California and Judy Cudmore of Bakersfield, California, his son, Ron Henry of Ontario, California, his brother, Beeman Henry of Ontario, California, his sisters, Francis Young of Victorville, California and Treva Halloway of Fontana, California, as well as 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

William was a wonderful caring husband and father. We will miss him dearly. Private services will be held.

He was born January 9, 1941 in Ironwood, Michigan, a son of Bernard and Gertrude Arducant Riley.

Surviving are three sons and one daughter-in-law, Brian Riley, Brad Riley and Brett and Dawn Riley, all of Fresno, grandchildren, Calvin, Nathan and Tyler, his fiancée, Linda MacGilchrist and her son, Mark, brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas “Mike” Riley of Schaumberg, Bernard and Sharon Riley of Kankakee and James Riley of Montgomery, sisters and Brothers-in-law, Barbara and John Fortin, Mary and Ed Williams, all of Kankakee, Polly and Dean Rabideau of Avon, Minnesota, Jo and Kevin McNaulty of Matteson, uncles and Aunts, Stanley and Jean Arducant of Ironwood, Michigan, and Dorothy Cole of Simi Valley, California, a great aunt, Dorothy Winans of Chicago, 21 nieces and nephews, six grandnieces and grandnephews.

His parents, grandparents, six aunts and uncles and one nephew are deceased.

For four years, Mr. Riley had been a detox unit manager at the Comprehensive Alcohol Program in Fresno. He served in the Illinois National Guard.

Francis E. Raiche, 71, of 205 South Sixth Avenue, Kankakee, died at 2:15 am Tuesday at St. Mary’s Hospital following a long illness.

He was born Dec. 27, 1911 in Kankakee to Mr. and Mrs. Denis Raiche. He was married to the former Henrietta M. Caron on May 23, 1953 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

He was a lifelong resident and graduate of the Kankakee school system. He was an Army veteran of the European theater, World War II and a member of St. Rose of Lima Church. He had been a pipe fitter for 50 years, retiring in 1972, and was a past secretary-treasurer of the Plumbers and Pipe fitters Union Local 383.

Survivors include his wife, one son, John of Orland Park; and one daughter, Carol of Kankakee.

Two brothers, Lawrence and Clement are deceased.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until the services Thursday at Senesac Kankakee Funeral Home. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today. Services will be at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral to St. Rose of Lima Church at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Lloyd Bowden will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Diabetes Foundation.

He was born December 20, 1925 in Kankakee, Illinois, the son of Philip and Jeanette LaFlamme Longtin. Surviving are his wife, the former Donna Odette, whom he married October, 22 1960 in Kankakee, four sons, and two daughters-in-law, Allen and Kim Longtin, Jeff and Linda Longtin, James Longtin and Andrew Longtin, all of Bradley; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Dick LaMie, of Bradley, four brothers and two sister-in-laws, Donald and Esther Longtin, of Oak Lawn, Harvey and Iva Longtin of Bourbonnais, Robert and Ray Longtin, both of Bradley. One brother, Bernard Longtin and one sister, Betty Carter is deceased.

Mr. Longtin was employed at the Bunge Edible Oils for 10 years and Swift for 15 years, retiring in 1990 as a forklift operator. He served in the US Army.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He was chairmen of the St. Joseph Festival for many years. He was a member of the Bradley Knights of Columbus, past vice-president and coach of Little League in Bradley-Bourbonnais, leader for the VFW Cub Scouts and member of Westside Booster bowling league.

Rev. Roger Drolet, Missionary

[This a man who went to St. Viator's College in Bourbonnais with my maternal grandfather, Clement Raiche]

Rev. Roger Drolet, CVS, 98, the oldest American Viatorian, died Thursday August 16, 2001 on the 77th anniversary of his vows, in Taipai, Republic of China.

Rev. Drolet, a native of Kankakee, spent 63 years of his priesthood in the Far East.

Rev. Charles Bolser, CVS Provincial, called him “a missionary to the end. He gave his body, heart and soul to the Orient-China, Japan and Taiwan. For the last 45 years, he has served in Taichung, Republic of China, and will be buried there among the people he served.” He was the son of Louis H. Drolet and Marie Lecour Drolet.

He entered the Viatorians at Chamberlain, South Dakota and pronounced his final vows in 1927. Rev. Drolet taught in Manchukuo from 1933-1935, and from 1935 until 1941 during the Japanese Invasion, he was a principal of a high school in Manchukuo. He returned to the United States and served the Viatorian Chicago Province as the master of novices from 1943-1948.

He returned to the Far East and in 1948 was assigned to Kyoto, Japan, as a teacher, master of novices and superior of the Viatorian Interprovence High School, Star of the Sea, and St. Viator parish missionary efforts.

In 1956, he was named superior of the new mission in what was than Formosa. He served as a teacher and master of novices in Taichung. He remained in Taichung for 45 years.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on August 20, 2001. A memorial Mass will be celebrated September 6, at the Viatorian College. Rev. Joseph Wang Yujung, Bishop of Taichung will officiate. Bolser will attend.

He is preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers, one of whom, Brother Joseph A. Drolet, CVS, was the first American brother ordained a permanent deacon.

Born Oct. 11, 1912, in Manteno, Ill., he was the son of Alexis O. and Lucy J. (Giroux) Surprenant. On May 24, 1934, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Mt. Clemens, he married the former Metta Virginia Ceresk, who survives.
      While living in Mt. Clemens, Mr. Surprenant was an assistant sales manager for Neds Firestone, where he retired after 33 years of service. From 1956 to 1986, Ted and his wife, Metta, owned and operated Shadowoods Cottages on Big Glen Lake. Over the years, they developed many friendships, and have wonderful memories of the people who stayed at their cottages.
      While living in Glen Lake, Ted was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church and actively served as an usher. Most recently, he was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Ted was also a member of Empire Lions Club.
      Along with his wife, Metta, of 69 devoted years, Ted is also survived by three sons, Theodore (Patricia) Surprenant of Sterling Heights, Gerald R. (Marjorie) Surprenant and James L. (Sally) Surprenant, all of Traverse City; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his two sisters, Viola Sheppard of Port Orange, Fla., and Madeline Van Zant of Mishawaka, Ind.
      Ted was preceded in death by a brother, Hillaire Surprenant.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Catholic Church on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Patrick Maher will serve as celebrant. Cremation has taken place.
      In remembrance of Ted, memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association or the Father Fred Foundation.
      Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
