Walt's dream was to purchase flat land that he could shape himself. He built an earthen embankment around his park, so that guests could feel like they had entered another world. Originally estimated to cost $4,700,000 to build, by opening day the cost had spiraled to $17,000,000 and would eventually reach $44,000,000.
